A national senior care provider retained PDC to develop a very unique opportunity. The State of Wisconsin would allow this provider to shift unused skilled care beds to an underserved area in western Waukesha County if land commitments and project development met certain deadlines. A new senior care campus was created with the goal of resident centered services within a culture changing environment. The planning and design results create an innovative senior care campus within walking distance of shops, restaurants and other commercial uses within a master planned community.
A 60 unit assisted living facility is connected to a 100 bed skilled care with a physical rehabilitation clinic. A residential scale is accomplished through building articulations and interior space organization into smaller neighborhood living components. The two level assisted living groups six different wings around dedicated common spaces which lead into a central commons containing dining, café, spa, hair care, wellness, massage, media, private dining, and intimate conversation areas. The single level skilled care facility is organized into six different functioning neighborhoods that intersect for operations efficiency and meet at a dedicated commons areas containing dining, café, informal meeting lounges, hair care, life enrichment and administrative functions.
Food preparation, presentation, and diet are accentuated by display cafes and decentralized, destination dining spaces managed by two very personable, well trained chefs dedicated to enhancing the senior environments. Each facility incorporates a generous amount of windows inviting the generous landscaping and walking paths into the interior. The skilled care facility envelops an exterior courtyard containing healing gardens, flexible outdoor activities arrangements and play area for visiting children.
The 84,000 square foot development was completed on time and within its $10 million budget in July 2009. The resulting senior facilities offer a warm, residential environment making a strong statement for cultural change in senior care. Dedication to the principals of de-institutionalization and resident first care can change the perceptions of skilled care and provide quality of life enhancements for our seniors in a humane, comfortable and sensitive care environment.
